Where the rates come from
The rates used by this tool are published by the Bank of Canada, every business day around 4:30 p.m. Eastern time. Each rate is the daily average of quotes collected from financial institutions: it expresses the value of one unit of a foreign currency in Canadian dollars. These are indicative rates, recognized as the reference in Canada, including by tax authorities.
How the tool converts
Since every currency is quoted in Canadian dollars, the conversion is direct whenever the Canadian dollar is on one side of the exchange. Between two foreign currencies, the tool goes through the Canadian dollar: the amount is first converted into Canadian dollars, then into the destination currency. This cross rate gives the same result as a direct quote between the two currencies. The calculation happens as you type, with no intermediate rounding: only the display rounds, following each currency's convention.
Reference rate and real rate
The reference rate is a benchmark, not the rate you will get when you actually change money. Banks, exchange bureaus and card issuers add an exchange margin on top of the reference rate, usually between 1% and 3%, and sometimes a fixed fee per transaction. On the same amount the gap can be significant: comparing the amount offered to the reference amount shown here is a good way to judge what an exchange offer really costs.
Frequently asked questions
The rates come from the Bank of Canada, which publishes every business day, around 4:30 p.m. Eastern time, the average of quotes obtained from financial institutions for 25 currencies. These are indicative reference rates, the same ones used by public administrations and many contracts.
Once per business day. The Bank of Canada does not publish rates on weekends or holidays: the tool then shows the last published rate, with its date. These are not real-time rates moving by the second.
The rate shown is an average reference rate. A bank, exchange bureau or card issuer applies its own margin on top, often 1% to 3%, and sometimes a fixed fee per transaction. Use the amount shown as a benchmark for comparing offers, not as a promise of what you will receive.
The Bank of Canada quotes every currency in Canadian dollars. To convert euros into US dollars, for example, the tool goes through the Canadian dollar: this is called a cross rate. The result is identical to a direct quote between the two currencies.
The tool keeps working with the last known set of rates and, failing that, with a dated fallback set built into the site. The date shown under the result always tells you how old the rates in use are.
No. The amount you enter and the currencies you pick never leave your browser: only the day’s set of rates is downloaded. Nothing is stored; reload the page and the tool starts again from its default values.
